This book is tragic, and beautiful. It’s hard for me to find a book that will literally move me to tears and in the flip of a page make me want to throw it against the wall. Dr. Cooke’s courage, and resilience in the face of such a dire situation is beyond inspiring and moving. My heart was with the people of Austin, Dr. Cooke, his staff the harm reduction allies, peer recovery coaches, and anyone who helped those in Scott County during this difficult time.Hard to believe here we are in 2021 and same program that saved so many is being taken away because people appeared “ungrateful” or because of individual moral beliefs and not data. -it’s actually not hard to believe which is even more unsettling. This book is not just about an opioid outbreak in a small Indiana town. It highlights systemic issues, generational poverty, and trauma. Most importantly this book highlights incredible bravery, courage and the resiliency of the human spirit and a community in the face of adversity.
